About our tutors

Barking Gecko tutors are experienced theatre artists who haveexceptional skills in bringing out the best in young people. They arewell respected in the arts community and all have a current Workingwith Children Check. 


Majkidz

Barking Gecko continues to work with His Majesty's Theatre providing tutors for their Majkidz programme. MajKidz is an exciting interactive programme of theatre workshops for kids aged 10 to 12 years. The program begins on 28 March 2009 and is held once a month on a Saturday morning from 9.30am to 12.30pm, throughout the year.  Visit majkidz for more information and to download the 2009 MajKidz registration form.

Workshops

Barking Gecko workshops are available to schools, day care providers and community groups. The active involvement of participants in workshops develops skills such as confidence, expression, problem solving and teamwork - all essential attributes for young adults.


Improvisation

Learning Outcomes: The Arts - Arts Ideas/ English - Listening, Speaking, Understanding Language


Overview: Explore the art of improvisation through a wide variety of games and exercises to develop skills for creating fast, funny and physical theatre on the spot.

Movement / Physical Theatre

Learning Outcomes: The Arts - Arts Ideas, Arts Skills & Responses/ Health & Physical Education – Skills for Physical Activity

Overview: Look at the basics of movement, examine the way we move and use physicality as a form of expression and means to portray different characters.

Script writing

Learning Outcomes: The Arts – Arts Ideas/ English – Writing, Listening, Speaking, Viewing, Reading

Overview: Explore different methods of creating theatre from improvisation to storyboard development and scriptwriting techniques. Especially suited for high school students working on their original solo performance.

Issue-based workshops

Learning Outcomes: The Arts – Arts Ideas/ Health & Physical Education – Attitudes & Values / Society & Environment – Interpersonal Skills, Investigation, Communication, Participation & Culture.


Overview: Experiment with the techniques of various drama practioners including Augusto Boal used to create theatre, which explores contemporary and youth issues. Barking Gecko works closely with your organisation to develop a workshop to address an issue relevant to your audience.  Examples of past workshops include Red Cross World Aware Program – a series of workshops exploring youth pride; Midnight Basketball – a program run by The Department of Sport and Recreation and the Midland community. This workshop focused on at risk young people and explored teenage drinking and peer pressure.
