"Being a playwright has let me have the most incredible adventures. I've been all over Australia and the world and worked with all kinds of different people and communities to tell all kinds of different stories. It's a joy and a privilege to be able to make up little worlds for a living."

We sat down with Dan Giovannoni to find out more about HOUSE and being a playwright...

Describe what HOUSE is about in 3 words.
Friendship, propellers, stormy feelings.

What inspired you to write the play?
I wanted to write a play about a character who thinks they don't fit in the world.

What’s the most important thing you’d love for audiences to experience or think about when seeing HOUSE?
To get lost in their imaginations! And to take away one little nugget of inspiration for later.

For some school students this will be their first time at the theatre. What do you remember about your first time at the theatre?
I think the first play I went to was with my dad - it was a super grown-up show and I had no idea what was going on, but there was one moment where the stage transformed completely, and trapdoors opened in the floor, and dozens of hands and heads popped out. Even though I was half-asleep, I was captivated by that moment of transformation - it felt like anything was possible in the theatre.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
A writer! I wrote lots of stories in primary school and wrote my first play in Year 10. I never really looked back.

What do you love most about being a playwright?
Being a playwright has let me have the most incredible adventures. I've been all over Australia and the world and worked with all kinds of different people and communities to tell all kinds of different stories. It's a joy and a privilege to be able to make up little worlds for a living.

What’s the best advice you have for someone who wants to write?
Keep going. First drafts are easy - second drafts are where things get interesting!
