Barking Gecko Theatre's 2022 Season is On Sale!
Our 2022 Season is an exploration and celebration of wonder.
Premiering in April is The Great Un-Wondering of Wilbur Whittaker. A brand-new Australian play about growing up and living outside the box, it is the story of Wilbur Whittaker, a reluctant hero who must journey across the universe in search of his lost wonder. An inter-galactic adventure for inter-generational audiences, The Great Un-Wondering of Wilbur Whittaker will premiere in the Heath Ledger Theatre before rocketing off to Karratha, Bunbury and Albany.
In July, Barking Gecko brings lauded WA storyteller Shaun Tan’s masterpiece Cicada to life with exquisite puppetry and visual storytelling. The tale of a dutiful cicada who works away in a grey office until his day of transformation finally arrives, this is a story of big ideas and one very adorable little insect. After it’s Perth premiere, Cicada will hit the road for regional WA.
2022 will see Barking Gecko’s Creative Learning programs continue to flourish. The Cicada Experience is back in January 2022 with our Teaching Artists delivering drama workshops in Harvey, Geraldton, Esperance and Albany. Inspired by Cicada, the 4 day workshops centre around themes of belonging, freedom, self-expression and transformation. Gecko Ensembles will expand into new regional areas, and School Drama, our teacher professional learning program, will continue to work wonders in classrooms across Perth and regional WA. In 2022 our theatres will once again overflow with students for our school matinee performances, including three thousand children who will access these experiences through fully subsidised tickets and transport as part of our Inspire Program.
